The simple but compelling story in Girlfight revolves around a troubled Brooklyn girl who lives in the projects. Then the girl discovers her passion for boxing, and with the help of a coach, she starts to train and finds out what it takes to be a contender. The story in Girlfight is reminiscent of Rocky, although Kusama’s film is not so much a sports story as it is a coming-of-age story, and the twist of a young woman being passionate about a sport considered inappropriate for her gender adds an intriguing dimension. But what makes Girlfight come alive is that it creates such a vivid portrait of high school senior Diana Guzman (brilliantly played with great intensity by Michelle Rodriguez), whose omnipresent rage seems to hover right at the verge of the boiling point.
A featherweight champ grows in Brooklyn, and to the surprise of the macho dudes down at the gym, it's a girl. These are the bare bones of the story, but Kusama goes far deeper--straight to the heart--in her knockout film debut. As the angry, physically violent high school senior who literally boxes her way into an all-male world, Michelle Rodriguez reveals astonishing sensitivity beneath her surly exterior. She's not so sensitive, however, that she won't climb into the ring and clobber the hunk she loves. This smart, rousing movie has more punch than all the Rockys combined.
Trouble comes too easily to Diana Guzman, a high school senior with a chip on her shoulder and nameless, aimless scores to settle. Running an errand one day for her father Sandro, Diana finds herself in one of Brooklyn's most famous boxing gyms. At the sight of boxers sparring in the ring, her mind explodes with the promise that you can be someone through the swiftness of your fists and your will to do harm -- finally, a place where she might belong! She starts secretly training to be a boxer, and wakes up quickly to find aches, pains, and an emotional tug-of-war with Hector, her world weary trainer. The discipline, cunning, and sheer hard work required to be a contender are the cold shower Diana needs to stir an ambition she's neglected all her life. Things get messy when she falls in love with another young boxer -- a guy whose ambivalent tenderness toward her puts her on the defensive, and whose fluid boxing style sharpens her own competitive edge.
