Please check conf. setting in your BIOS related to your HDD, if it is conf. to use AHCI mode change it native or IDE mode. Windows Xp has a problem recognizing SATA disks in AHCI mode. Other way is to provide a RAID driver if your motherboard has provided one(either with support disk or web site).

Are you booting your system via bootable Cd/DVD or the partition C:\ on which you want to install new OS? Going by your statement it looks as if you are trying to format your system from either within windows or cmd. It is not possible. Use a bootable disk & follow the instructions.

Is it a laptop or tower?

    Do this first:

Go to start, run, type msconfig, boot.ini tab, check boot paths?
    Should look like this:

    If not tell me.
If it does - go to next step

    Turn off your system restore.
    Turn off your antivirus
Go to system tools and do a disk cleanup
    Now defrag computer
Go to start, run, type msconfig, startup tab, uncheck all startup items, close
    shut down
    restart and try to install

Please backup your data first so that you don't regret it later.
    Use:
    1. Partition Magic
    Code:
    http://www.forumdivx.com/showthread.php?t=88426&highlight=partition
    or
    2. Paragon Partition Manager
    Code:
    http://www.forumdivx.com/showthread.php?t=164786&highlight=partition
    or
    3. EASEUS Partition Master
    Code:
    http://www.forumdivx.com/showthread.php?t=155451&highlight=partition
& create a bootable disk with them. Then boot through that disk & use it to make changes to your disk. They all have graphical interface so there should not be any difficulties.

Note: There could be an error with your partition table also, because of which you are seeing no or inaccessible partition. In that case use:

    1. Active@Partition Recovery
    Code:
    http://www.forumdivx.com/showthread.php?t=56788&highlight=partition
    or
    2. Partition Table Doctor.
    Code:
    http://www.forumdivx.com/showthread.php?t=50852&highlight=partition
Correcting partition table is a risky business so backup your data first.
